Let’s clean some appliances!

Spring cleaning your kitchen doesn't have to be a chore. Well, not an unpleasant one. With a little planning, you can check this off your to-do list in just an hour. To get started, you will need the following: dish soap, white vinegar, baking soda, a scrub brush (or an old toothbrush), an all-purpose cleaner, and cleaning rags. Now fill your kitchen sink with hot, soapy water, and let's get going.

How to Clean a Glass Cooktop

Remove the knobs and the stovetop grates, and pop them into the soapy water.Add 2 cups water, ¼-cup baking soda, and ¼-cup dish soap to a spray bottle. Gently shake the bottle to combine. Spray your stovetop, range hood, and backsplash with the solution and let it stand for 30 minutes. Spray again and wipe clean. Rinse off any remaining residue and wipe it dry with a clean rag. Scrub the oven knobs and grates with a scrub brush, rinse, and pop everything back into place.

How to Clean an Oven

Even if you have a self-cleaning oven, it benefits from a good wipedown before running that option. You can use a degreaser, your all-purpose cleaner, or even the baking soda mixture you made previously. Baking soda is an effective natural degreaser. Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes and then spray again to wipe clean.

How to Clean a Dishwasher

Remove the racks from your dishwasher and spray around the sides with the baking soda or all-purpose cleaner. Wipe clean. Check the trap at the bottom for any food or debris, and remove it. If your dishwasher has a filter, clean that out too. Pour a cup of white vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher along with ¼-cup of baking soda, then run it using a short cycle, using the sanitize setting if it has one. Replace the racks, and you’re ready to go!

How to Clean a Microwave

Take the glass plate in your microwave and put it in the sink with the soapy water. Combine 1-part water and 1-part white vinegar -- about a half cup total -- and place it in a microwave-safe container, then in the microwave. Run the microwave on high for about 10 minutes, or until the liquid boils. Let the mixture do its job. Then, remove the container from the appliance and wipe down the sides. Spray any stuck-on gunk with the baking soda mixture or an all-purpose cleaner. Wipe clean. Scrub the glass plate, rinse, and dry. Then return it to the microwave.

How to Clean a Refrigerator

Discard anything old or expired in the fridge. Take out all remaining food items and even the removable drawers and shelves. Place them in the sink with the soapy water. Spray the interior of the fridge with the  cleaner, and  let it stand for 10 minutes. In the meantime, scrub clean the drawers and shelves, then rinse and dry them. Go back to the fridge and respray the interior, this time wiping it clean. Then, wipe it all dry with a clean, dry rag. Return the drawers and shelves, and you are ready to go!

How to Clean Your Appliances in an Hour

Now that you know how to clean your kitchen appliances, here's how to do it in an hour. Keep in mind, this is an hour of actual work and doesn't include appliance run times.

Begin by gathering all the supplies listed above and mix your DIY cleaner. Fill the sink up with soapy water and place the fridge drawers and shelves in there, along with the microwave plate and range knobs and grates. Spray the cooktop, oven, dishwasher, and refrigerator as instructed.

Run the microwave with the vinegar solution. During that time, clean the glass plate (start those knobs, grates, or shelves if you have time). Wipe down the interior and return the plate.

Wipe down the interior of the dishwasher and clean out the trap. Add the vinegar/baking soda solution and start the appliance. Return to the fridge and respray the inside, then wipe everything clean. Scrub any drawers and shelves you have left to clean. Wipe all the pieces dry and return them to the fridge. Respray the oven and wipe it clean. Open a nearby window and start the oven's self-cleaning mode.  Respray the cooktop and wipe it clean. Spray the exterior of each appliance and wipe it down. Now you are done with time to spare!
